The Uniform Issue

I.Describe Problem or Issue

The world of education is filled with controversial issues, and theorists with opposing viewpoints. One subject that has long been the topic of debate is the practice of imposing dress codes, and school uniforms. Many schools across America, both public and private, have imposed dress policies with varying levels of scrutiny. The tradition of school uniforms is one that was preserved out of English culture and has been part of America since the first educational institutions. Although school uniforms were once a means of distinguishing one's social status, they have now garnered support as a way to eliminate superficial displays of economical inequities. Still, others feel that the implementation of school uniforms is a breach of freedom of expression. There are many individuals with conflicting viewpoints concerning this multifaceted issue. One must consider the legal, academic, behavioral, and economic implications of dress policies before constructing an informed opinion. In this presentation the issue of dress policies and school uniforms will be examined thoroughly, with all aspects considered.

II.Research Summary

To put into practice a dress policy is to produce a multitude of effects both positive and negative. These consequences can be categorized as being economic, behavioral, legal, or academic. This was our guideline in conducting our research. Bill's research sought to determine the economic effects of school uniforms. Uniform policies often require students to purchase expensive clothing putting students of lower economic status at a disadvantage. The legality of school dress policies and their legal consequences was analyzed by Aaron. The constitutionality of school dress policies is often questioned because many see them as a breach to the right of freedom of expression, and an infringement of.the rights given to Americans in the 1st and 14th amendments. Max's research focused on finding and identifying a connection between school dress policy and student behavior. Many professionals have contradictory viewpoints on whether dress code affects behavior, and there is a lack empirical data on the topic leading to subjective conclusions. Mary's research was centered around determining if there was any correlation between academic success and school dress policy. There was found to be no direct correlation between academic success and school dress policies that could be proven through the analysis of empirical data.

III. Product Overview

Our presentation will consist of multiple parts. A brief introduction will familiarize the audience with the topic before each group member explains the research associated with their research question. We will then conduct an activity which is a discussion about school dress policies to determine the class' experiences and opinions with regards to school dress policy. The opinions of the students will be based off of personal experience as well as any information regarding school dress acquired during or prior to the presentation. This discussion will reinforce the fact that most opinions on school dress policies are based off personal experience and anecdotal evidence.
